Working as a writer for Sault Business Matters, you can certainly learn all about the different facets involved in various industries.

And in this case it was some lessons in the art of working with trees!

You see, for over thirty-five years, Glen Chiblow, who is the owner of Sault Tree Experts, has expertly guided his business to become one of the best arborist companies in the region which takes great pride in the service they provide.

Glen took an arborist program back in the 1980s at Humber College and ended up spending thirteen years in the Toronto region honing his skills before deciding to return to his roots and come back to Garden River First Nation and the Algoma region.

Sault Tree Experts employs five full-time workers and one part-time worker and all of Glen’s team work hard and pay close attention to detail which is so important when it comes to the art of pruning, safely taking down trees, aesthetics, making recommendations for tree health etc.

Glen explains that working with trees, hedges etc. is not simply a matter of turning on your chainsaw and going to town — skill and precision is required and that is something he and his team excel at.  He explains that it takes several years of hands-on training to really become adept at being a gifted tree climber as they are known in the business.

From a young age, Glen found his passion and he explains that it is pruning in particular that he enjoys and has always had a particular flair for and it actually takes a very artistic eye to do it well.  It is something he enjoys doing and is almost therapeutic in a way and when you find something you love, it doesn’t feel like work!

You might be asking, so what does Sault Tree Experts do anyway?  Well, the answer to that is likely more than you think!

Services offered by Glen and his team include hazardous/dangerous tree removal, professional pruning to remove dead, unhealthy limbs or for aesthetic reasons, hedge pruning, stump removal, and chipping because your wood can be turned into beautiful wood chips that can then be used for a variety of purposes.

They have a state of the art wood chipper.  They really take great care with any project you may have and will literally go out on a limb for you!

Glen has always led and trained his team to be courteous, efficient, and professional.  As Glen is fond of saying, he tells his team to “cut with rope, not with hope” and he also tells Sault Business Matters that a tree climber is only as good as his or her damage record.

Glen and his team are ready to take your order 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

When asked how far in advance should people contact him regarding a project,  Glen indicated that he will definitely accommodate urgent requests especially ones that pose a danger.  He can be called for emergency services day or night since as he joked, he is a light sleeper.  He has had many 4 a.m. calls when a tree has gone through a roof after a storm and that is the nature of the business.

Sault Business Matters asked Glen about any memorable experiences in his arborist career and here’s a pretty fun fact, when he lived and worked in the Toronto region, he did some work for Canadian music icon, Anne Murray in Thornhill, Ontario.  (The song Snowbird may or may not have been playing in his head as he worked, I leave this to your imagination.)

What sets Sault Tree Experts apart from some of their competitors is that they will always try to preserve the tree whenever possible. They have some techniques they use to make trees last longer and remain healthy such as filling cavities to prevent rotting, proper trimming techniques to preserve the tree and some of these take a couple of days which is why other companies will simply suggest cutting it down.  They also have a portable saw mill that is a valuable commodity for the business that also sets them apart.

Some parting advice from Glen, if you have trees on your property, always remember to look up, look for splits, check for mushroom growth which are signs of tree weakness and like your garden, trees should be fertilized once a year.
