Sault Business Matters has received the following statement from Mayor Christian Provenzano relative to National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Sault mayor Christian Provenzano

“On National Indigenous Peoples Day, I want to recognize the continued leadership demonstrated by the Indigenous communities and people in our area. Today is an important opportunity to celebrate Indigenous culture and traditions, and to reflect on the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

“I am committed, and I believe our community is committed, to a mutually respectful relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Recognizing the very difficult truths of our past, celebrating Indigenous culture and committing to work in collaboration with one another are all significant aspects of forging these relationships.

“There is – undoubtedly – significantly more work to be done, but I am confident we will continue to progress if we continue working together, listening to each other and celebrating our cultural diversity and strength.

“We need to approach our collective future with a collaborative spirit. If we do so, we can and will create a better community for many generations to come.”
