Good jobs available here

Hello out there. Looking for work? Well, Sault Ste. Marie is looking for trained workers to fill hundreds of well-paying jobs.

According to a story in the National Post newspaper, officials from here in the Sault say they are focused in part on the Ontario city of Oshawa, where about 2,600 autoworkers are expected to lose their jobs by the end of 2019.

General Motors has announced it will shut down its Oshawa assembly plant by the end of the year.

Further to that, Sault Ste. Marie’s deputy chief administrative officer Tom Vair says the city is looking to fill about 300 jobs — 250 of them with major local employer Algoma Steel.

Vair says local officials plan to reach out to the General Motors employees who will be out of work to try to highlight the benefits of moving north to the Sault.

Vair says it is part of an effort to attract young people and skilled workers to a city that is aging.

“The community has recognized it needs to invest in itself,” Vair pointed out.

The Sault also has jobs in information technology, finance and a burgeoning film industry through one post-production company that has recently set up shop, Vair noted.

“We’ve heard consistently that some of the employers are starting to run into trouble finding skilled labour,” Vair said.

But besides jobs, Vair said he first has to sell prospective workers on the Sault.

“We found a lot of people who don’t have an idea of what life would be like in Sault Ste. Marie,” he said.

According to Vair, many have no clue about the size of the Sault, which has a population of about 73,000.

Meanwhile, the cost of living is significantly cheaper in the Sault, Vair noted.

What you think about “Good jobs available here”

  1. Oshawa auto workers are skilled? Are you serious? I live in Oshawa from the Sault and worked at the plant and had to leave when layoffs occured , why not try a different approach and call back people who left their beloved hometown..sometimes I shake my head at the Sault policies..it’s home but wow administrative wise..out of touch totally

  2. Warning ! This definitely looks like a posting for positions in the proposed Ferrochrome plant that the community has yet to have a say on . One of the most highly toxic and environmentally destroying industries in the world , IF MONEY IS WORTH MORE THAN YOUR LIFE , if you are OK with the prospect of years of chemotherapy or death from exposure to Chromium VI or perhaps the idea of achieving deep seeded cancer in your DNA to be passed on to your future offspring is your goal , THEN THIS IS THE JOB FOR YOU ! The citizens of Sault Ste Marie are vehemently opposed to this industry being forced upon their community. The Enormous health risks and environmental damage to the land and area waterway ie: Lake Superior is imminent . ALGOMA STEEL has long been a violator of environmental protection standards making SSM one of the highest cancer stricken communities in Ontario , if not Canada and dozens of local doctors have formally announced that if that Ferrochrome plant (which is in partnership with the Algoma Steel ) comes to SSM then they will be leaving . So then there is the very unattractive fact that you will be relocating to a northern community with a serious lack of medical support to help you with your illnesses . This is what they WILL NOT POST as the added bonuses for these jobs . BUT WHAT DO I KNOW , I am But an intelligent native daughter of SSM , who has witnessed the heartache and suffered the loss of young lives to the cancer that already ravages my beloved home town . This is corporate greed at its finest and as a conscientious human I believe innocent people looking for work MUST BE INFORMED of what they are NOT being sold on . Sorry not sorry .
