Who to vote for locally?

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of the governing Liberals has made the call to commence the campaign ahead of the October 21 federal election.

Locally, the 40-day campaign begins with Liberal incumbent Terry Sheehan attempting to retain his seat in the House of Commons as the member of parliament for the Sault.

Sheehan is up against four local opponents in what is the 43rd Canadian general election.

Alphabetically, Geordon Mclean of the Green Party, Sara McCleary of the New Democratic Party, Sonny Spina of the Conservative Party and Amy Zuccato of the new People’s Party of Canada will all try to unseat Sheehan.

The Liberals currently hold a majority government with 177 seats. The Conservatives have 95 seats, the NDP has 40, the Green Party has two and the People’s Party has one.

Sheehan can say that he has his record to stand on — a record that includes having preserved the precious Sault Ste. Marie steel industry and creating additional jobs.

Meanwhile, it will be worth noting whether Mclean, McCleary, Spina and Zuccato go on the attack against Trudeau, Sheehan and the Liberals as their focus or whether the challengers instead opt to try to tell voters why they and their parties present a better alternative for the Sault.

It is 40 days and counting as the October 21 election looms.
