Afternoon drive on the Eagle

John Gilbert has spent a good part of his adult life in the Twin Sault radio market. A hometown boy, Gilbert is now the host of the afternoon drive (3-7 p.m.) show on local radio station Eagle 95.1.

Gilbert’s career in radio broadcasting began 35 years ago when he was hired by the Sault’s then-new top 40 station, the now-iconic 99.5 Yes-FM. He later left Yes-FM to work in Maine only to return to Michigan about 25 years ago.

Since returning to his home territory, Gilbert had a return engagement at Yes-FM, among other gigs. And he recently signed on as the afternoon drive announcer at Eagle 95.1 at the invitation of station owner, morning man and program director Tim Ellis.

Ellis knew of Gilbert from their time together at the aforementioned Yes-FM, where the two developed a mutual respect for each other.

“That’s how I knew I wanted John as part of our Eagle family here in the Sault,” Ellis relayed to Sault Business Matters.

As there is no shortage of quality radio stations in the Twin Sault market, Eagle 95.1 is the relatively new kid on the block, broadcasting out of the Michigan Sault.

Just over a year ago, new ownership took over the Eagle 95.1 as the aforementioned Ellis, along with his wife Lindsay, purchased the radio station.

As Gilbert is a warhorse of the local radio airwaves, so too is Ellis. Ellis, aka Timmy E, is closing in on 25 years as a Sault broadcaster.

Ellis has focused on making Eagle 95.1 a community-minded radio station and he is also working at getting more involved in the Sault, Ontario market.

In fact, veteran Sault, Ontario broadcaster and commentator Andy Martens will soon be on the Eagle 95.1 airwaves with a new show called Twin Sault Talk. The talk show — which will air on Sundays at noon — is slated to debut on Eagle 95.1 during the latter part of February.
