Ho, ho, ho.

Sault member of provincial parliament Ross Romano has delivered an early Christmas present to 43 employees of Huron Central Railway.

That is, via Romano and the Ontario government, Huron Central will continue its rail service between the Sault and Sudbury until at least June 30, 2021 as it works towards a long-term solution.

Huron Central was set to close down operations on December 18 of this year.

“We continue to work to secure the future of short line rail in northern Ontario,” said Romano.

Huron Central and the Ontario government are working to come up with viable options for future sustainability — and Sault member of parliament Terry Sheehan and the federal government are now part of the talks.

The current agreement to continue rail service until at least June 30 of next year will allow both levels of government to review the proposal made by Huron Central for improvements to the rail line.

The proposal was made by Huron Central as a way to make the operations of the line sustainable for the long-term future.

The Huron Central freight line runs between the Sault and Sudbury and its operations are crucial to local industries such as Algoma Steel et al.

Huron Central reportedly wants more than $40 million from the Ontario and provincial governments to upgrade the line.
