EDITOR’S NOTE: Sault Business Matters has received the following media release from Superior Adult Learning relative to a program designed to help seniors with practical skills.

Superior Adult Learning (formerly Program Read) is pleased to announce a new program that will help seniors in Sault Ste. Marie learn practical skills that will help them increase their independence, connect with family and friends and participate more fully in today’s digital world.

The “Practical Digital Skills for Seniors” service, funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors program, will feature a mix of in-person and online learning opportunities for seniors on a variety of topics, including:

  • How to Use Smart Phones
  • Email Basics
  • Evaluating Online Information
  • Using Video Chat
  • Recognizing Spam
  • Completing Online Forms
  • Online Shopping
  • Online Banking
  • Introduction to Social Media

Martin Wyant, Executive Director of Superior Adult Learning, knows that while many seniors are tech-savvy, there are others who would like to learn more. “We are living in an increasingly digital world”, said Wyant “Improving digital skills can help many seniors reduce social isolation, improve their independence and increase their engagement in our community”.

All services are free for all individuals who are 55+ in Sault Ste. Marie. Tutoring will occur in Superior Adult Learning’s offices, located at 955 Queen Street East (aka the “Doctor’s Building”). Sessions will be based on the individual learning goals of each participant.

Seniors who are interested in learning new digital skills are encouraged to contact Superior Adult Learning for more information by sending an e-mail message to [email protected] or by phoning 705 946 3953. Further information about Superior Adult Learning may be found at www.superioral.ca.
