Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is expected to have its District 2 downtown location at 120 Brock St. (on the corner of Wellington St. E.) in full operation by the fall.

The new cop shop will be housed at the former regional assessment office on the corner of Brock and Wellington and includes 8,000 square feet of space on two floors.

“Our goal is to maintain a stronger presence in the downtown core,” relayed police chief Hugh Stevenson, who noted that coverage of the downtown area will include bike and foot patrols as well as check-ins with downtown businesses.

The city police service will lease the building from the Anglican Diocese of Algoma with an initial 10-year commitment.

“The opening of this new downtown police station represents a significant step towards creating a safer downtown where people want to spend their time at attractions and their money at local businesses,” noted Sault Mayor Matthew Shoemaker.  “There is so much untapped potential in the downtown area. Not many communities have ready access to the kind of natural beauty featured so prominently in the downtown area.”
