EDITOR’S NOTE: Sault Business Matters has received the following media release relative to the mayor’s youth council and a scholarship opportunity.

The Sault Ste. Marie Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the MYAC Leadership Scholarship.

In an effort to facilitate opportunities for local youth and create equitable opportunities for marginalized people, MYAC will be providing two scholarships valued at $1,000 respectively. One of the scholarships will be designated for applicants who identify as a marginalized person and the other scholarship will be available for applicants who do not identify as a marginalized person or do not wish to be considered as part of the marginalized person application pool.

“The MYAC Leadership Scholarship is a tremendous demonstration of the council’s commitment to advocating for their fellow youth,” said Mayor Matthew Shoemaker. “The benefits of attaining a post-secondary education go well beyond career prospects and contribute to a better overall quality of life. I encourage upcoming highschool graduates to submit an application.”

Students entering post-secondary education that reside in Sault Ste. Marie are eligible to submit an application. The application period is open until July 5, 2024 and recipients will be announced in August 2024. The application form is available online.

“Our goal is to empower local youth by providing financial assistance for their educational pursuits, while also fostering a more inclusive community. By investing in our young leaders, we are investing in the future of Sault Ste. Marie. I am proud to support the MYAC Leadership Scholarship initiative,” said Jordan Barone, MYAC co-chair.

“I am thrilled to support the MYAC Leadership Scholarship program,” added Erin Swan, MYAC co-chair. “This initiative not only supports local youth but also fosters inclusivity by providing equitable opportunities for all students in Sault Ste. Marie to pursue their educational goals.”
