ELECTION REFLECTIONS
The Liberal Party of Canada scored a stunning 2025 federal election sizzler with Prime Minister Mark Carney — leader of an association written off as recent as a few months ago — winning a fourth straight Liberal government mandate.
ON THE MARK: The improbable win for the Liberals will go down as a truly remarkable accomplishment, coming in the wake of the resignation of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the prorogation of Parliament in January of this year. At the time, leader Pierre Poilievre and the Conservative Party of Canada were leading in the polls and appeared poised to form a majority government. However, with Carney as their new leader, the Liberals were able to capitalize as Canada saw a rise in nationalism in response to despised United States President Donald Trump and his tariffs.
FINAL STANDINGS: The Liberals emerged with 169 seats compared to 144 for the second seed Conservatives. Showing ongoing resolve, the Bloc Québécois ended up with 22 seats while the New Democratic Party was reduced to just seven seats and the Green Party winning one.
DISASTER FOR NDP: The NDP went into the election with 24 seats and came out with a mere seven. Jagmeet Singh stepped down as leader of the NDP after losing his own British Columbia seat — and party status in the House of Commons. Yikes.
SHEEHAN SHINES: In Sault Ste. Marie-Algoma, Liberal incumbent Terry Sheehan received 30,271 votes compared to Conservative candidate Hugh Stevenson’s 28,648 votes. It was a decisive win for Sheehan — who has now won four successive elections — in upending Stevenson by well over 1,600 votes. Laura Mayer of the NDP was a distant third with 4,215 votes followed by Robyn Eshkibok of the Green Party with 531 and Christian Heritage Party representative James Collins with 297.
WTF IN WINDSOR WEST: In a major upset victory, Harb Gill of the Conservatives won the Windsor West riding over long time NDP incumbent Brian Masse. Masse had held an iron clad grip on the Windsor West riding since way back in 2002. Masse’s loss after 23 years as Windsor West MP was part of the epic unraveling for the NDP. (There is already a push among Masse loyalists for him to challenge Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens in the 2026 municipal election.) As for Gill, his victory marks the first time Windsor West has had a Conservative MP in the six decade history of the riding.
I think I knocked on every door three times🤭 It was a great workout. I had so many in my heart, especially the people of Ukraine. I think the world now realizes how quickly things can change. My late husband was in finance and thought very highly of Mark Carney as did many in that profession. Meeting both he and his lovey wife Diana was an honour. Terry Sheehan brought in National Defence Minister Bill Blair to speak with the volunteers. This was highly motivating. I know being the honourable, hardworking and dedicated men both Mark Carney and Terry Sheehan are, they will do great things for our community, country and the world. It’s refreshing to see how excited other countries are to work with us. The future is bright and I am grateful 💪🇨🇦
Awesome!
Susan Kovacs Weigel provided motivation and inspiration for me as a volunteer for this important election. We enthusiastically set out on our assignments to assist our leaders in accomplishing this race. It was a awesome experience meeting with citizens of our community and listening to their stories.
