‘We need results’ — Martin Wyant
Safer Neighbourhoods: We Need Results. So says Martin Wyant, a candidate for Ward 5 City Councillor in the October 26 municipal election. See below on what this forward thinking man with a vision for his Ward — and the Sault — has to say.
Sault Ste. Marie is spending much more on policing, but serious safety problems remain.
Police need the resources to keep us safe. But police cannot solve every problem on their own. Addiction, mental health, homelessness and public disorder all affect safety in our neighbourhoods.
My Safer Neighbourhoods Plan calls for earlier help for people in crisis, safer public spaces, neighbourhood safety teams, better access to treatment and housing, stronger programs for youth, and more support from senior levels of government so local taxpayers don’t have to carry the growing costs alone.
Most importantly, we need to measure results.
Are violent crime and repeat offences going down? Are problem areas becoming safer? Are fewer people cycling through police, hospitals and shelters? Are taxpayers getting better results for the money we spend?
Success isn’t about how much money we spend or how many programs we create.
It’s about making our neighbourhoods safer—and having the results to prove it.
