Here is the bird count
The local and area Christmas bird count results are in. And of note, a harlequin duck sighting was among the observations.
The recent count featured 77 field observers and 35 feeder watchers totaling 56 species and a sum of 10,103 individual birds.
Counting took place on both the Ontario and Michigan sides of the border at Sault Ste. Marie.
The count circle has a radius of 12 kilometres, at the middle of the International Bridge.
At any rate, highlights included a harlequin duck in the St. Mary’s River, two Carolina wren visiting feeders, an eastern towhee (also visiting a feeder) as well as a late-migrating horned grebe.
New high counts were set for seven species — 491 common golden-eyes, 1,870 rock pigeons, 204 bald eagles, nine red-bellied woodpeckers, 107 red-breasted nuthatches, 126 dark-eyed Juncos and five song sparrows.
Of note, this was the 64th running of the annual Sault-based Christmas bird count.
