Radio newscaster flashback
I have worked in the local radio business as a sportscaster, on and off, since 1975. And besides the “good sports” who I have worked alongside, there has also been a memorable cast of news hounds who I shared a microphone with at 920 CKCY, YES-FM et al.
Following are 10 venerable — and mostly retired — local radio newscasters who I have worked with, and how I remember them as announcers, in less than 10 words.

Smoothest of the smooth deliveries who articulated words effortlessly.
JOE PETROLO
Million dollar voice.
DAVID GAZER
Made it to the big time with CKLW Windsor.
SAM KAPLAN
Bad hair. (Sorry.)
JIM CRONIN
Cool, calm, collected and consistently consistent.
TONY TAGLIABRACCI
Versatile and hard working.
MARG TURNER
Female trailblazer with a natural delivery.
KARL SEPKOWSKI
Boring.
JOHN CAMPBELL
Controversial commentator and consummate pro.
RON DEWEY
Made it to the big time in Detroit.

I worked for nearly 40 years and Karl Sepkowski was National quality in voice and presentation. May have been boring in his personal life , I Don’t know. The best News gatherer was without a doubt Lionel McCauley . I remember working on CJIC TV switcher when I got a long Distant phone call from Lionel asking me to put up a News Bulletin slide on TV he was breaking the Barber murder case from Nova Scotia. Karl went nuts trying to figure out how he scooped it from the Maritimes. Lionel was a class of his own.
Some of the Best voices going all the way back to 1965 -1969 err-a.
John Rhodes, George Jonescue, Ray Haines, Peter West, Art Osborne, John Wishart, Larry Jacklin, Russ Ramsay, Don Ramsay, Grace Pitt, John Meadows, George Fraser. Norm Blakley, I should never have started this I know I have missed a few and that was only during my time 5 fun filled years at CJIC TV and Radio. Or as I refer to them as the years at Hyland High.
