Highway 17 between Webbwood and the Espanola turnoff — about 150 miles east of the Sault — was closed for about five hours on Saturday night.

The lengthy closure was due to a four-hectare forest fire that was burning near the roadway.

An Espanola resident, who was driving home on Saturday evening after being in the Sault, told Sault Business Matters that the area between Webbwood and the Espanola turnoff — spanning about eight miles — was “blanketed in heavy smoke. It seems to be well under control as we speak this (Sunday) morning.”
