Feature: City Meat Market
It is rare to come across a business located in downtown that can boast of being a landmark for over 100 years. But such is the case with one of downtown Sault Ste. Marie’s finest examples of top-notch customer service, City Meat Market.
It is truly amazing that City Meat Market has been serving the people of Sault Ste. Marie since 1910 in various capacities over the years. Current owners John and Rosina Bruni purchased the business in 2005 and with the help of their daughter, Lori-Anne Nowitski, and son-in-law, Jamie Elliott, have built a very loyal following that can largely be attributed to their dedication to providing friendly, warm, personalized customer service and listening to their customers’ needs.
It is not uncommon to be greeted warmly by name by Rosina, John, Lori or Jamie because once you try many of their in-house made products, you will soon become a regular — which this writer can definitely attest to!
It is no secret that people are more conscious of wanting to know where their food is sourced from and City Meat Market has made a concerted effort to carry more locally sourced products such as meat, fresh Lake Superior white fish and lake trout, smoked fish, produce, and specialty items such as maple syrup, and a wide variety of ethically-sourced coffee from St. Joseph Island Coffee Roasters.
In addition to many of the staples you would expect to find in a neighbourhood grocery store, as the name would suggest, the store features an extensive meat department with quality meats and competitive prices.
Popular favourites include in house porketta roasts, marinated back ribs, in-house sausages including their new jalapeno cheddar variety, and in-house seasoned chicken wings that quite honestly rival any of the ones served at popular wing joints — all for a very reasonable price!
Store specialties include stuffed pork chops and pork steak rolls. Meat packages are a great way to fill your freezer and are a good option for families of all sizes and there are several options available with various prices, all quite reasonable.
An extensive pasta selection, specialty Italian food products, gluten free pastas and cookies/crackers, and imported Italian specialty chocolates are some of the other popular items you can expect to find at City Meat Market as well as gift items like espresso sets, and even sausage-making machines if you want to try your hand at making your own sausages.
In-house dried pasta and bread like “mom used to make” and the deli where you can buy one of City Meat Market’s generous sandwiches on store-made buns have become increasingly popular for those needing a quick bite.
The freezer is also jam-packed with other great options for those needing a helping hand getting dinner on the table with in-house lasagnas, sauce, meatballs, patties, meat pies, sausages, and even in-house broth, can often be found — just to name just a few!
Of note, customers can phone in their order and staff will ensure it is ready for whatever time you request or you can also have it delivered for a small fee.
Did you know that City Meat Market can offer catering for your events? It’s true — just ask to see what they can offer and take that stress off your list of things to do.
Gift baskets starting at $30 are another valuable service available for the special people in your life.
And during hunting season, John and Jamie can offer customized wild game processing.
Don’t forget that City Meat Market is also the place to get your popular holiday items such as fresh free-range turkeys, lamb, turkey rolls and bacala to name a few.
So, do yourself a favour and plan a visit soon to see for yourself why City Meat Market is one of downtown Sault Ste. Marie’s true gems and a true example of service excellence!
