Hundreds of participants — including many from out of town who spent the weekend here and poured money into Sault Ste. Marie businesses — took to the trails of the annual Run The Great Lakes today. Among those who took part in the 10 kilometer downtown run was Saginaw, Michigan resident Keith Bell.

The 49-year old Bell (pictured in photo above) who was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and who graduated elementary, secondary school and Sault College here, made the trek to his hometown with his wife and their two adult children.

A veteran of cross-country marathons, Bell works as a nurse in Saginaw. His Michigan-born wife, Debbie Shaffer (aka Shoffner), is a former drive time announcer from the glory days of Sault Ste. Marie radio station 99.5 YES-FM.

As a family, the Bells took part in today’s event which also included less-distance runs for kids, and a walk.

The Run The Great Lakes event is in its 21st year and is an annual happening that donates proceeds to the Sault Area Hospital and Algoma Residential Community Hospice.

Others who were spotted taking part in today’s run included 36-year old local chiropractor, Dr. Chris Myers, a former high school basketball standout at St. Mary’s College.

Also among the runners was 60-year old Mike Devuono, a former high school football star with the Bawating Braves.

Run The Great Lakes, an annual event, was held today in Sault Ste. Marie with a beginning on the downtown waterfront.
