The GPFD Group has confirmed the acquisition of MacKay’s Pharmacy, a trusted health care provider serving the residents of St. Joseph Island for over three decades.

MacKay’s Pharmacy has long been a cornerstone of health services on St. Joseph Island,” said Joe Greco, partner of GPFD Group. “We’re honoured to invest in the future of this essential business and support the health of this vibrant northern Ontario community.”

Under the new ownership, MacKay’s Pharmacy, which currently operates under the Guardian Pharmacy Banner, will transition to Island Drug Mart, under the I.D.A. Banner on September 8, 2025.

The GPFD Group is working closely with the MacKay family to ensure a smooth transition both for the customers and for the MacKay’s into retirement. There will be no interruption in service to customers during the transition period, said the GPFD Group in a media release.

The acquisition aims to build on the MacKay’s tenure by introducing enhanced services, expanded inventory, and digital innovations — all while preserving the personalized, community-first approach that local residents have come to rely on.

The pharmacy will offer its customers free delivery of prescriptions from Monday to Friday beginning on Monday September 8, 2025. Further services such as a Nurse Practitioner Clinic will be announced after opening. Island Drug Mart will serve all surrounding areas.

More announcements concerning the pharmacy’s operations will be made throughout the summer.
