Wyant seeks Ward 5 seat
Martin Wyant has confirmed his candidacy for Ward 5 City Council to Sault Business Matters — and at the same he is promising practical leadership, fiscal responsibility and a renewed focus on the issues that he feels matter most to residents.
“Representing Ward 5—and our community—should not be a side hustle,” said Wyant. “It requires commitment, preparation, and a willingness to make difficult decisions in the best interests of our residents.”
A long-time community leader with experience in manufacturing, economic development, social services, education, and health care, Wyant says the City of Sault Ste. Marie needs to return its attention to core municipal responsibilities.
“Our roads are deteriorating. Families are concerned about public safety. We need more doctors, more affordable housing, and a stronger local economy. These challenges require practical leadership, careful planning, and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars,” said Wyant.
Wyant believes City Council must establish clear priorities instead of trying to do everything at once.
“We simply cannot afford every good idea. We need to focus on projects that solve real problems for residents—not projects driven by outside consultants or special interests,” he added.
His campaign priorities include:
- Repairing and maintaining roads and core infrastructure.
- Strengthening public safety while supporting effective mental health and addiction services.
- Keeping property tax increases at or below inflation whenever possible.
- Improving transparency and accountability at City Hall.
- Advocating for physician recruitment and expanded health-care services.
- Supporting economic growth and local job creation.
Although new to the elected office game, Wyant brings decades of executive leadership experience.
His career has included senior leadership positions with successful manufacturing companies, economic development organizations, youth-serving agencies, employment services, and community organizations, including Superior Adult Learning, SHARE Family & Community Services, the Sault Family YMCA, Sault Community Opportunities, and Main Filter/Filtrec North America.
Wyant currently serves as a tri-chair of the Algoma Ontario Health Team and as a member of the Sault Area Hospital Mental Health and Addiction Patient and Family Advisory Committee, while previously serving numerous community organizations including the Algoma Leadership Table, Sault Workforce Entry Committee, United Way of Sault Ste. Marie, the Downtown Association, and the Sault Community Information and Career Centre.
“I may be new to politics, but I’m not new to leadership,” Wyant said. “I’ve managed budgets, built partnerships, hired and coached teams, developed community projects, and worked with organizations to solve complex problems. If elected, I’ll get right to work—and I’ll never lose sight of who I represent.”
