In what is being termed a collaborative effort, the City of Sault Ste. Marie and the Soo Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League have teamed up to spend more than $1,000,000 towards upgrading GFL Memorial Gardens.

According to a press release issued today by the Greyhounds, the OHL team and the City of Sault Ste. Marie “have made the most upgrades in the history of the Home of the Hounds this off season … in total, over $1,000,000 worth of enhancements were made inside the facility to improve fan experience and users safety.”

Of note, the release goes on to indicate that “the full purchase price and costs of installation of the video board and subsequent components (totaling more than $600,000) was funded entirely by the Greyhounds as a way to give back to the best fans in the Ontario Hockey League and to provide more and better sponsorship opportunities for our corporate partners.”

The downtown facility opened less than 15 years ago, on September 29, 2006.

The improvements to GFL Memorial Gardens have come with the Greyhounds in competition with their OHL rival Oshawa Generals to play host to, and compete in, the 2021 Memorial Cup championship tournament.
