Mountain Maple Cabins
Have you ever wanted to escape to the tranquility of nature, be able to access hiking trails including the Voyageur Trail, cross country ski or snowshoe in the winter? Or maybe you also want to boat, canoe or kayak with access to the Prince Township marina mere minutes away while not having to travel a great distance from Sault Ste. Marie?
Well, you now can simply by booking a stay at beautiful Mountain Maple Cabins located in Prince Township. This gem is located in a secluded, picturesque, forested area 600 feet from the mountains of the Canadian Shield.
One short half hour hike on site leads to a beautiful summit view offering a stunning view of the City, and even our Michigan neighbours. Another short trail leads to a lovely waterfall and for history and mining buffs, you can even visit an old abandoned copper mine located in the nearby mountain that according to amiable owners Lawrence and Debbie Mageran dates back to the turn of this century. And the old mine is located a mere 400 feet from the bunkie you will be comfortably staying in. Geocache enthusiasts will also want to consider a stay here, hint hint!
Mountain Maple Cabins are open all year round and were completely designed and constructed by the very talented owner Lawrence Mageran who has worked in the construction business for the better part of his life. He describes these bunkies as a labour of love and the decision to open this business as a way to ease into retirement from his other construction business and to share this outdoor experience with others.
In speaking to Lawrence recently for this story, you can see how much pride he takes in his craftsmanship and the quality of the bunkies speak for themselves. I would describe a stay at Mountain Maple as an ultimate glamping experience and he jokes that his two young granddaughters aged 19 and 16 , are his two most frequent guests so if these young ladies love it so much, we are pretty sure you will too!
Lawrence describes this project as a pure labour of love and it shows! He is a remarkably talented man who is largely self-taught who in addition to being a talented builder, also has his pilot’s licence and he owns a spacious tug boat that he still enjoys captaining which down the road may be used to offer guests scenic boat tours up to Goulais River area if they want to add to their experience while staying there. He recently used his tug boat to travel all the way to Thunder Bay at the spry young age of 74, how impressive is that? He showed me some photos of his other builds and wow, was I impressed, especially the saunas he has built which inspired the design of the two bunkies that make up Mountain Maple Cabins.
Lawrence explained that he has a spacious workshop on site that he uses for his builds. The bunkies were built on steel frames in the workshop right from the logs that he finished himself. With great pride, he explained that not a single piece of wood used is pre-fabricated. Once he finished building them, he used his loader to move them into their home on the grounds.
The main bunkie is 10′ x12′ with a completely screened in entrance that provides complete protection from bugs for guests. It has a full pull-out bed, table and chairs, sink and tap with clean drinking water, microwave, coffee maker, propane fridge, and heater. In addition there is a sleeping bunkie nearby that sleeps an additional four people that can only be booked alongside the main bunkie so guests don’t have to worry about sharing space with strangers. The sleeping bunkie has double bunk beds, table and chairs, heater, LED lighting with night light, and a 4′ x 12′ deck sitting area. Both are spotless and evidence of Lawrence’s craftsmanship can be seen throughout. A clean porta potty with flush toilet and hand wash basin that is fenced in for privacy is available for guest use and this winter Lawrence is working on a separate building which will further satisfy guests’ comfort level since it will contain a shower, bathroom and space for guests to dry off and/or store their bulky, often wet outerwear after exploring the great outdoors on site since the bunkies are fairly tight quarters.
Guests have access to a spotless BBQ and sheltered picnic table as well as a fire pit to enjoy during their stay. A sauna could also make an appearance at some point; we may have made that suggestion during the course of our interview knowing how much people might enjoy that after spending time outdoors!
